4. sushi-go-round

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

5. preparing Salmon Nigiri Sushi

Sushi Mentai is a familiar brand for those who have a liking for Japanese cuisine – after all, there are more than twenty outlets in cities such as Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Penang and now, it has finally arrived in Ipoh.

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

6. close up shot of Salmon Nigiri Sushi being prepared

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

7. Tori Katsu Don (chicken cutlet simmered with egg on rice) – RM12.80

The brand is already well-known for bringing Japanese cuisine to the masses by keeping prices affordable without compromising on quality, taste or freshness. So, it was no wonder that the restaurant was packed when my family had our lunch there on the fourth day of its opening (opened on 17th Nov, 2015).

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

8. Tori Katsu Curry Rice (chicken cutlet and rice with curry sauce) – RM13.80

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

9. Salmon Teriyaki Don (grilled salmon with Teriyaki sauce on rice) – RM14.80

Most people preferred Sushi Mentai’s selection of fresh sushi from the conveyor belt. After all, each plate is only RM1.80 (as indicated by yellow-coloured plates) and RM2.80 (red-coloured plates).

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

10. Tori Teriyaki Don (grilled chicken cutlet and rice with Teriyaki sauce) – RM12.80

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

11. Agedashi Tofu (fried bean curd) – RM4.80

Each range boasts 25 different varieties, and that’s a lot of choices to pick for a meal!

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

12. Saba Teriyaki (mackerel grilled with Teriyaki sauce) – RM11.80

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

13. Tori Katsu (chicken chop) – RM8.80

What my family had were from the à la carte menu. Obviously, compared to the conveyor belt, our food took a bit more time to prepare but we didn’t mind the wait.

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

14. Salmon Mentaiyaki (salmon grilled with cod roe) – RM14.80

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

15. Yasai Tempura (assorted vegetable tempura) – RM6.80

So, today’s photos were our lunch for four taken a few days ago, with items that ranged from special maki (rolls) to yakomono (grilled, broiled or pan-fried), agemono (deep-fried) and of course, donmono (rice dishes).

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

16. Tempura Moriawase (assorted tempura) – RM13.80

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

17. Salmon Wrap (salmon & cucumber wrapped with rice sheet) – RM10.80 for 6 pieces

As you can see, we opted for rice instead of noodles (menmono). The Chinese must have rice even while eating Japanese! Hahaha!

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

18. Unagi Kabayaki (eel grilled with Kabayaki sauce) – RM18.80

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

19. Takoyaki (takoball) – RM4.50 for 5 pieces

Looking at these photos, you can imagine how full we were. I was prepared for the bill to be above RM200, as prices on the menu are exclusive of 10% service charge and 6% GST.

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

20. Kaki Fried (fried oyster) – RM9.80 for 3 pieces

Sushi Mentai Ipoh

21. all these for under RM200!

To my surprise, the bill came up to under RM200 for everything, which was just right for my budget. Will I return for another meal? Of course, since these dishes were just from a small selection of the menu. But then again, I’d probably go for the sushi-go-round this time!

Alor Limbat Homestay in Marang, Terengganu

$

0

The end of October saw me head out to the East Coast state of Terengganu. Yes, again! I have lost count of the number of times that I have visited the state but Terengganu is just too large that it is impossible to visit the entire state in one trip.

Alor Limbat Homestay

1. silat demonstration

Our first stop was Kampung Alor Limbat in Marang. We were there to check out the new homestay establishment managed by Koperasi Desa Alor Limbat Marang Berhad (KODESAL).

Alor means stream while Limbat is the species of a fish. Kampung Alor Limbat is located some 25 km from Kuala Terengganu. The population here is slightly more than a thousand.

Do be aware that this is a rural community and while the people are friendly and courteous, they may not have the same kind of outlook about things that city folk do.

Alor Limbat Homestay

2. set up of the accommodation

Even though the homestay here is already open to guests, there is still plenty of work to be done to start receiving paying guests. The ten cabins are basic – they can accommodate two to four guests, at only RM100 per night.

The kampung (village) view is very peaceful and I think that given some time, when the trees have grown and flowering plants bloom, the village will be like a lovely, welcoming garden. This is the reason why I hope to return one day and see how it has developed.

Guests who come to stay at Kampung Alor Limbat can indulge in a number of old childhood games and get to savour traditional food too.

Alor Limbat Homestay

3. petik mata traditional game

Petik Mata is a traditional game played by children and adults alike. Although I do not know the specifics of the game, the one who can hit the stick the farthest wins.

And then there is another game called Gasing Cacang. Like the name suggests, it is a game of tops. Top spinning is a traditional game of the East Coast. In Kampung Alor Limbat, villagers play it during the dry season, festivals and special occasions.

As a guest of Kampung Alor Limbat, I was able to witness for myself the making of traditional food. They were foreign to me as these are not what we can pick up from the supermarket.

Alor Limbat Homestay

4. grinding noodles for laksa kebok

Laksa is a very common food in Malaysia. Here at Kampung Alor Limbat, it is usually prepared and eaten after harvest season. This is an all-day dish and I would say, an all time favourite. At the same time, it can be found during festivals. The laksa noodles is made using “kebok”, giving it a very smooth texture and delicious taste. In Terengganu, it is eaten either with a red or white sauce.

Alor Limbat Homestay

5. frying emping

Emping, to me, is like cereal (or flakes). It is actually made from rice, whereby the rice, young or old, is soaked in water for several hours. After soaking, dry it by frying it in a pan without adding oil, until they turn white.

Alor Limbat Homestay

6. emping ready to be served

Then, pound these flakes in a wooden mortar. These flakes are served with coconut and a sauce called “serawa”.

Alor Limbat Homestay

7. pounding lok lik

Lok Lik is a speciality prepared for banquets at the mosque. Made of young rice known as “pak ah”, it is pounded in a mortar with palm sugar and coconut until well-blended.

Alor Limbat Homestay

8. lok lik ready to be served

Alor Limbat Homestay

9. pounding gajah mengamuk

Gajah Mengamuk is a traditional food of the community. Usually served for breakfast, it is made from tapioca, boiled and then pounded. It is served with sweets, coconut or sugar.

Alor Limbat Homestay

10. menimba ikan

How do villagers here catch fish? By way of gotong-royong, forming groups of 30 to 40 people when the dry season arrives. Scooping leftover water out of pools and creeks the men, usually, use various tools and even their bare hands, get hold of the fish to be prepared for dinner.

It is said that if you are in Tererngganu and do not try all of their special delicacies, your visit is not valid. What are the delicacies, you may ask. Top off my head is Nasi Dagang, then there is Keropok Lekor and of course, Keropok Keping.

Willy Satay, Kajang

When in Kajang, it is a must to feast on satay, as many skewers as we could. One of the more popular stalls that we went to for dinner one evening was Willy Satay, at Ramal Food Junction (food court) in Taman Ramal Indah.

Willy Satay

1. Willy Satay in Kajang

I have no idea why Willy Satay became the satay stall of choice – I was told their popularity only boomed a few years ago.

Willy Satay

2. the many grills of Willy Satay

Throughout that evening, their tens of grills were working non-stop and still, the queue for food was exceptionally long.

Willy Satay

3. fulfilling a satay order

I was lucky not to have to wait that long as we already made advanced booking for beef and chicken satay. The other two types of satay available here are lamb and innards.

Willy Satay

4. satay hot off the grill

I noticed that unlike the usual satay, Willy Satay don’t have too much fat pierced between the chunks of meat, which is how I like my satay served.

Willy Satay

5. a smiling server

Furthermore, the peanut sauce was awesome and the satay that was grilled to perfection could be savoured as they were without additional sauce.

While Willy Satay is highly recommended, if you plan to try them out, do bear in mind that you have to spare at least 30 minutes of waiting time.

Grill & Such, Seri Kembangan, Selangor

I am someone who has no patience to wait for my food to get cooked. Thus, steamboat and grill are my least favourite eating places. As such, my recent dinner at Grill & Such in Seri Kembangan was almost like a new experience for me.

Grill and Such Seri Kembangan Selangor

1. Khai presents the specially-prepared à la carte items

With the motto “Taste the thrill”, Grill & Such, which was opened in October 2015, offers locals the chance to dine on local food in Korean style.

Grill and Such Seri Kembangan Selangor

2. a set of 13 items from Grill & Such

Owner Fadzil Shaari from Sungai Siput, a trained architect with his own firm, loves Korean food himself and thought that it would be a good idea to set up a similar eatery where diners can bond over a low-carbohydrate meal.

Grill and Such Seri Kembangan Selangor

3. my special set without beef or mutton

Featuring timber panelling against bright lights, Fadzil believes that this ambience would improve one’s appetite. It certainly did to mine, after all the trouble grilling my food and being bombed with sizzling oil. LOL

Grill and Such Seri Kembangan Selangor

4. it’s time to grill ‘em

The grill set has 13 items marinated with homemade sauce, but I opted to have mine without beef and mutton, so my table had only eleven items. Nonetheless, diners may order from the à la carte or go for another round of the 13-item set.
