Flower Pot Ice Cream

Flower pot ice cream has been a craze in Ipoh for quite a while. I have never tried it myself because the “soil” looks very messy to eat.

But my foreign friends who recently tagged along with me to the pasar malam (night market) were fascinated with it and ordered one each, at RM4 per pot.

flower pot ice cream

flower pot ice cream

The ice cream comes in various common flavours such as chocolate, vanilla, rainbow, honeydew, etc.

The “soil” is actually Orea crumbs. Haha…. that’s a smart idea! Other ingredients added are usually colourful M&M’s, groundnuts and English parsley for the leaves.

Obviously, the attraction in flower pot ice cream is in its presentation.

In Ipoh, besides night markets, they are also sold by different vendors at the square in front of Ipoh Railway Station.

California Steakhouse and Steamboat

1. Chef Shuid preparing salad

After having spent 22 long years in the kitchens of some of the top hotels and resorts around Malaysia, Chef Hj. Shuid bin Hj. Othman decided that it was time to be his own boss. Nine years ago, along with his wife, Nor Haslina, Chef Shuid opened his first Western restaurant in Tanjung Malim, Perak, despite being a Penangite.

This restaurant in the new student township of Taman Universiti, Tanjung Malim, was opened three years ago, after relocating to this area. The first attractions of the steakhouse and steamboat would be the many decorative items. It’s a gallery by itself with thousands of items to catch one’s eye.

According to Chef Shuid, these are knick-knacks from his personal collection, and although he had wanted his restaurant to spot an Arabic concept initially, obviously it didn’t work out! Nevertheless, Chef Shuid loves to see the smiles on the faces of his patrons and their children as they admire his collections while waiting to be served.

Chef Shuid said that unlike the many Western-style cafés and eateries mushrooming all over town, his food presentation is as authentic as one could get. He said, “There’s nothing fanciful about my food presentation as I prefer to let the taste do the talking.”

To all my burger loving friends in the Klang Valley. What do you know? Tanjung Malim also has its own burger shop!

Loveats Tanjung Malim

2. with fries on the side

Called Loveats, there are five types of burgers: beef, chicken, lamb, fish and veggie. Priced from RM8.80, I have to admit that dining here could be a luxurious indulgence for many a student’s budget as Loveats at located in the student township of Taman Universiti in Tanjung Malim.

Loveats Tanjung Malim

3. Loveats is packed to the brim

Here, every edible is ‘homemade’ according to Chef Fazlizam Abas, who is also the CEO of the company. If you noticed the black buns, it’s because they are black bamboo charcoal buns. And yes, they are homemade too, hence you would never find these buns anywhere else.

New Concept Duck Dishes From Restaurant SYW

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

1. lunch fit for a queen at Restaurant SYW in Ipoh

Gearing up to the 40th anniversary (1976 – 2016) of the Sun Yeong Wai brand is its new modern concept restaurant in the heart of Ipoh City, simply named Restaurant SYW.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

2. signature pipa duck - RM17 (quarter portion)

The Sun Yeong Wai name is no stranger to Ipohites who love their fix of duck, particularly crispy roasted duck. The original eatery is the double-shoplot in Taman Ipoh Jaya near Ampang Jaya and the second branch is at Bandar Baru Medan, near Ipoh Garden East.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

3. poached duck meat salad – RM10.90

With this new eatery opened in mid-March this year, spotting a classy black façade, Restaurant SYW is the first outlet of the new, modern concept managed by Sun Yeong Wai. This brand aims to cater to the younger generation who are more into a healthier diet and lifestyle.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

4. claypot duck porridge – RM8

Setting itself apart from the original eateries are a number of items on the menu that are only available at Restaurant SYW. Among them are Claypot Duck Porridge, Poached Duck Meat Salad and making a comeback is the secret family recipe of Claypot Ginger Duck.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

5. claypot assam grouper fish – RM12

Obviously, time-honoured signature duck dishes that Sun Yeong Wai is so well-known for are also available here. Don’t miss out on the succulent dong quai roasted duck or the drier but crispier pipa duck.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

6. claypot ginger duck – RM26

To any Chinese, a meal would be incomplete without accompanying either of the above duck dishes with roasted pork, roasted chicken or barbecue pork.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

7. claypot sour n spicy vegetables – RM6

When an opportunity arose for my family and I to dine at Restaurant SYW, I admit, I had my reservations. Duck has never been my preferred fowl dish, except for roasted duck, because I don’t fancy its usually gamey taste.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

8. roasted pork - RM17

However, I would say that Restaurant SYW has passed the test of my palate with flying colours. I have been told that gaminess of the ducks had been overcome with the marinades.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

9. barbeque pork (RM17) with a drink of pumpkin with barley (RM3)

By the way, my lunch of all the above dishes was washed down with the healthy beverage combo of pumpkin with barley, and the newly introduced refreshing jackfruit smoothie, that has retained its natural sweetness.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

10. a drink of jackfruit smoothie (RM7.70) – a newly introduced beverage at Restaurant SYW as well as the other two Sun Yeong Wai outlets

Restaurant SYW is totally worth a try. With soft music in the background creating a cosy ambience, dining here in this preserved old shop-house will certainly present a different experience compared to the Sun Yeong Wai that we know and love.

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

11. introducing the new Restaurant SYW in Ipoh

As you can see from the prices that I have included here, indulging in a meal (non-halal) at Restaurant SYW is budget-friendly. Besides, prices here are GST-free, which means, more value for our Ringgit!

Restaurant SYW Ipoh

12. on the first floor

This is a three-storey building but currently only the first two floors are open to sit-down diners. The restaurant can cater to about sixty pax simultaneously, comfortably. The second floor will spot a different concept that would only be unveiled in due time.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish in Ipoh

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

1. dinner fare at Rawang Famous Steam Fish, including the restaurant’s signature fish dish

Here’s good news to all foodie friends! You know the Lan Je Fei Chau Yu (Sister Lan’s tilapia) that we have to queue up for in Rawang? Waiting for our fish for one hour is not too bad but there are times when we go there and they are sold out or closed for the day! Dang!

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

2. the restaurant’s signature dish: Rawang Famous Steam Fish - generously topped with Bentong ginger mash and a dash of cili padi kampung

Well, the good news is that now, we can indulge in an even better fei chau yu dish right here in Ipoh. This family-owned restaurant, just opened in mid-May 2015, serves the best steamed black tilapia (fei chau yu), if I may say so.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

3. stir-fried brinjal with crisp fried anchovies and spring onions

If you love Lan Je’s steam fish, you would love it twice as much here at Rawang Famous Steam Fish, which is generously topped with 100% Bentong ginger mash and a dash of spicy kampung cilli. So, whenever you crave for steam fish Lan Je-style, this is where you should head to for your fix. Say goodbye to travelling long distances! Rawang Famous Steam Fish is just down the road from Symphony Suites Hotel.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

4. stir-fried pea sprout with diced garlic

As you can see from these photos, the size of the fish is not large. In fact, the standard serving of each fish is about 350g to 400g. This is because we are supposed to order one fish per person, which means there’s no more fighting over who gets to eat the best part of the fish. Well, each person will get the whole fish to himself. Prices for the fish start from RM18. No GST is charged.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

5. stir-fried kai lan (Chinese broccoli) topped with the freshest, most succulent prawns

While observing the team of kitchen crew, the fish is live in the aquarium and only netted out to be cleaned and cooked upon receiving an order. How much fresher could it get? Therefore, diners should expect to be served only in 15 to 20 minutes’ time after placing an order. Other seafood is just as fresh – the prawns are procured from Pantai Remis (Perak), and that also only from the last boat to return to the jetty.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

6. eggs with preserved radish (choy pou) as filling

Besides the highly recommended signature dish of steamed black tilapia fish, other dishes that we had included the chef’s speciality of stir-fried brinjal (eggplant) with crisp fried anchovies and spring onions. Brinjal prepared this way is uncommon, I was informed.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

7. Thai-style sweet and sour crispy boneless chicken topped with pickled salad

Actually, apart from the steamed fish which is available daily, other signature dishes are served on rotation basis, which means sometimes, they are only made available on different days throughout the week.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

8. full house

Soon to be introduced would be roast meat, such as crispy duck, and also time-honoured Hakka dishes whereby their secret recipes have been passed down from one generation to another within the family.

Rawang Famous Steam Fish Ipoh

9. Rawang Famous Steam Fish is located at the corner unit at Symphony Business Park in Ipoh

Meanwhile, enjoy the home-style cooking of the dozen or so mainly Chinese dishes on the menu (although there is no hard-copy menu), whether it is for lunch or dinner, at pocket-friendly prices, dispelling the myth that a meal with a fish dish, especially one generously topped with the caviar of ginger (Bentong ginger) is expensive. No, it doesn’t necessarily be so!

The restaurant can comfortably accommodate about 150 diners concurrently. They encourage walk-in customers, which is good for those of us who don’t like to make reservations. I know I don’t.
